Dual Education at Nordico: Learning by Doing, Connecting and Building Community

Education. Specialty coffee. Circular economy. Tourism. Gastronomy. Innovation. Community.

In a world where education is changing rapidly and practical skills are becoming increasingly important, one question matters more than ever:

Are we preparing young people only to pass exams — or are we preparing them to participate confidently in real life?

Dual education exists to help close that gap.

At Nordico Coffee Roasters in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, we believe that learning should not remain trapped inside classrooms, books or theory. Real learning happens when knowledge meets responsibility, when students connect with people, products, processes and decisions — and when they begin to understand how a real business works from the inside.

That is why Nordico is opening its doors to students from Colegio Técnico Profesional de 27 de Abril as part of a structured dual education experience focused on specialty coffee, hospitality, tourism, gastronomy, production, e-commerce, community and practical learning.

What Is Dual Education?

Dual education combines two learning environments:

Academic education
and
practical experience inside companies or organizations.

Its objective is simple:

Learning by doing.

This model does not only develop technical knowledge. It also helps students build abilities that are essential for life and work:

  • critical thinking
  • communication
  • responsibility
  • teamwork
  • problem-solving
  • professional confidence
  • practical judgment
  • soft skills

In a real workplace, students do not only observe. They learn how decisions are made, how quality is protected, how customers are served, how products are created and how different parts of the economy are connected.

Dual Education in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, dual education was formally regulated through Law No. 9728 – Dual Technical Education and Training Law, approved in September 2019 and officially published in October of the same year.

This legal framework allows students to be trained simultaneously in two spaces:

educational institution + training company

The purpose is to connect education, employability and real-world experience.

For students, this means early exposure to professional environments.
For companies, it means the opportunity to help shape future talent.
For communities, it means stronger connections between education, local businesses and economic opportunity.

Nordico: More Than a Coffee Shop

At Nordico, we believe that companies can become places where people learn, experiment and create opportunity.

Nordico is often seen as a café. But behind every cup of coffee there is much more:

  • sourcing
  • roasting
  • quality control
  • traceability
  • hospitality
  • customer experience
  • production
  • logistics
  • storytelling
  • e-commerce
  • tourism
  • community work

That is why we see Nordico not simply as a coffee shop, but as a living laboratory of specialty coffee, experiences, education and community.

A place where students, producers, tourists, professionals and local institutions can connect.

A place where Costa Rican specialty coffee is not only served, but explained, experienced and understood.

Building the First Generation

Together with Colegio Técnico Profesional de 27 de Abril, we are welcoming our first group of students into a structured learning experience with objectives, guidance and practical exposure.

The students will gain insight into different areas of a real specialty coffee business:

Specialty Coffee

Students can learn about:

  • traceability
  • coffee origins
  • Costa Rican coffee regions
  • quality control
  • roasting culture
  • sensory evaluation
  • production processes

Specialty coffee is not only a beverage. It is agriculture, science, craftsmanship, logistics, culture and human relationships.

Gastronomy and Hospitality

Students can experience how service is built through:

  • customer experience
  • professional communication
  • product presentation
  • hospitality standards
  • teamwork
  • attention to detail

In hospitality, every interaction matters. A good experience is created through hundreds of small decisions.

Tourism and Experiences

Tourism is not only hotels and restaurants. It also includes:

  • storytelling
  • local identity
  • experience design
  • cultural connection
  • specialty coffee education
  • community-based value creation

At Nordico, students can see how Costa Rican coffee becomes part of a visitor’s experience of the country.

Manufacturing and Production

Behind every product there are systems. Students can gain exposure to:

  • standards
  • inventory
  • production planning
  • consistency
  • food safety
  • improvement processes

This helps students understand that quality does not happen by accident. It is built through discipline, repetition and care.

E-Commerce and Commercialization

Modern businesses also require digital skills. Students can learn about:

  • online sales
  • product communication
  • digital tools
  • customer journeys
  • brand positioning
  • international markets

Because today, a coffee roasted in Costa Rica can reach customers in Tamarindo, San José, the United States, Canada, Europe and beyond.

Tourism Is Much More Than Hotels and Restaurants

One of the most important lessons is that tourism is an ecosystem.

Tourism also means:

  • agriculture
  • coffee
  • logistics
  • manufacturing
  • technology
  • culture
  • commerce
  • gastronomy
  • transportation
  • storytelling
  • innovation

Every meaningful experience requires many people and institutions working together.

Businesses.
Schools.
Public institutions.
Communities.
Producers.
SMEs.
Families.
Local workers.

Understanding this ecosystem is essential. Because the future of tourism in Costa Rica depends not only on beautiful places, but on people who know how to connect quality, culture, sustainability and professional service.

Understanding How the Real Economy Works

One of the most important goals of dual education is helping students understand how the real economy moves.

Because economics is not only studied.

Economics is experienced.

It happens when:

  • raw materials are purchased
  • coffee is roasted
  • pastries are produced
  • experiences are sold
  • suppliers are paid
  • jobs are created
  • customers return
  • local value is generated

This is where another important concept appears:

Circular Economy

Circular economy is not just a theory. It is the idea that resources, knowledge, opportunities and value should remain active within communities for as long as possible.

This matters especially in areas such as:

  • SMEs
  • rural tourism
  • gastronomy
  • regenerative agriculture
  • specialty coffee
  • local production
  • community-based business

When students understand these connections, they begin to see that every business decision has an impact.

A coffee shop can support farmers.
A roastery can create jobs.
A tourism experience can strengthen local identity.
A school-business partnership can open doors for young people.

Why This Matters

Educational inequality remains a real challenge.

Not every young person has equal access to:

  • technology
  • professional networks
  • early work experience
  • mentorship
  • career opportunities
  • real business environments

Dual education does not solve every problem.

But it can open doors.

Doors to better judgment.
Doors to confidence.
Doors to practical knowledge.
Doors to opportunity.
Doors to real-world connection.

And sometimes, one open door can change the way a young person sees their future.

Creating Experiences Also Means Building Community

Companies that create experiences have a special responsibility.

Not only to sell products.

But to create spaces.

Spaces where people can:

  • experiment
  • make mistakes
  • ask questions
  • learn
  • build confidence
  • understand quality
  • develop professional skills
  • grow

At Nordico, we believe the best experiences are not only consumed.

They transform people.

That is true for specialty coffee.
That is true for tourism.
That is true for education.
And it is true for community.

Perhaps the real question is no longer only:

“Are young people prepared?”

Maybe the deeper question is:

“Are we prepared to create spaces where they can become prepared?”

Nordico Coffee Roasters: Specialty Coffee, Education and Community

Nordico Coffee Roasters was built around a simple belief:

Good coffee should create more than a good moment.

It should connect people.
It should respect origin.
It should support quality.
It should create opportunities.
It should bring Costa Rican specialty coffee closer to the world.
And it should help build the community around it.

Through this dual education initiative with Colegio Técnico Profesional de 27 de Abril, we are taking one more step in that direction.

Because Nordico is not only about coffee.

It is about people, learning, craft, community and the belief that better experiences can help build a better future.

Good People Drink Good Coffee.
